National Park Service Reaches Agreement with American Revolution Center for New Museum in Philly - 01-07-2009
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and the American Revolution Center (ARC) today announced that the National Park Service has reached a historic agreement to develop a national museum dedicated to the American Revolution. The National Park Service signed a land-exchange agreement with ARC to establish this museum at Independence National Historical Park.

Valley Forge Park ready to kick-off its biggest summer ever - 22-05-2012
On Saturday, June 20, 2009, Valley Forge National Historical Park will kick-off its biggest summer season on record with a bang, literally. The Annual March-out of the Continental Army commemoration will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It was in June 1778, six months after first arriving at Valley Forge that a rejuvenated Continental Army marched out of the Valley Forge encampment in pursuit of the British Army, which had evacuated Philadelphia. This year commemorates the 231st anniversary of the event.

Washington?s Headquarters will again be the nerve center of Valley Forge this summer. Beginning this weekend visitors can take ranger led tours through the area as the newly renovated attraction at Valley Forge National Historical Park will give visitors another reason to re-live history.

Park Receives Donation of an Oath of Allegiance - 23-02-2009
Descendents of a Continental Army officer have donated to the park a United States Oath of Allegiance that was issued from the Valley Forge encampment. The oath was issued to First Lieutenant Lawrence Allman, a Pennsylvania native and member of the Continental 4th Artillery. On it is hand-written ?Sworn before me at the Artillery Park, Valley Forge this 15th day of May 1778,? and is signed ?HKnox B.G. Artillery.?

Family-friendly activities to celebrate George Washington's Birthday at Valley Forge National Historical Park - 06-02-2009
This year, to celebrate George Washington's 277th birthday, Valley Forge National Historical Park will host more than 2,000 Boy Scouts, welcome Continental Army re-enactors from the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment and present a period birthday cake. Throughout Presidents' Day weekend (Feb. 14-16) visitors to the Park can enjoy hands-on activities commemorating the birth of George Washington at the place where it was first celebrated, in 1778. At that time, a group of soldiers serenaded the then-46-year old General for his birthday outside his headquarters.

Oneida Indian Nation Artifacts on Display at Valley Forge National Historical Park - 09-01-2009
The Oneida Nation has generously lent several artifacts from its collection for display at the park's Welcome Center. These artifacts help visitors to understand that those fighting for our country's independence came from various parts of society; of different races, religions, and lands of origin. The Oneida association with Valley Forge dates back to the winter of 1777-78 when Washington's forces were stationed at Valley Forge. In March 1778, Washington asked the 20-year-old General Lafayette to recruit Native allies in anticipation of a spring movement of the armies. Knowing that the Oneidas had long-standing ties of friendship with the French, Lafayette traveled to New York in hope that this friendship would influence the Oneida to fight for the American cause.

Valley Forge National Historical Park Receives Save America's Treasures Grant - 17-12-2008
Today, Valley Forge National Historical Park Superintendent Michael Caldwell announced the receipt of a $61,299 grant from Save America's Treasures, in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Humanities that will be used to conserve 42 Revolutionary War documents and books from the park's collection and to make them accessible to researchers and for exhibition.

Momentous "March-In" at Valley Forge National Historical Park - 02-12-2008
Gen. George Washington and more than 40 re-enactors will mark the anniversary of the Continental Army?s historic winter of 1777 March-In to Valley Forge on Friday, December 19. "Then as now, soldiers were far from home, facing danger and uncertainty. This 231st anniversary event commemorates the fundamental importance of Valley Forge," said Mike Caldwell, Park Superintendent.

New Handbook On American Revolution Published - 30-11-2008
The newly issued National Park Service handbook on the American Revolution tells the sweeping story of the American Revolution and puts in context the events and people from more than thirty parks in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and National Capital Regions. ?It is my hope that this handbook becomes a new model for the Park Service,? said Director Bomar. ?This handbook focuses on multiple sites and will inspire readers to visit the many parks that tell the story of the American Revolution.? Published by Eastern National, the book underscores the National Park Service role in preserving and interpreting the Revolution. The handbook also contains an introduction by President Jimmy Carter and essays by historians Pauline Maier, Don Higginbotham, Gary B. Nash, Gordon Wood, and Charlene Mires.

Partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Announced - 15-10-2008
The National Park Service (NPS) and the Friends of Valley Forge Park, in partnership with the McNeil Center for Early American Studies of the University of Pennsylvania today announced the creation of The Bruce Baky Valley Forge Fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded to a PhD candidate specializing in military history during the American Revolution. The fellowship honors the late Bruce Baky, former Chairman of the Friends of Valley Forge Park and a long-time advocate of strengthening connections between the academic community and the park.

Children Discover the Great Outdoors at Valley Forge Park - 08-10-2008
Valley Forge National Historical Park is known for the history it holds about America. But two, new free programs for kids focus on the history the Park holds about the environment.During "Into the Forest," held the second Saturday of each month beginning in October, children will hike Mount Joy. As they trek through flora and fauna, they'll learn forest structure and how to identify common trees and plants. Current threats to the forests at Valley Forge and their importance for a healthy environment will also be addressed.

The Baron Returns! Valley Forge to host Steuben biographer for lecture, book signing - 25-09-2008
The Baron de Steuben made history at Valley Forge over 200 years ago when he whipped the Continental Army into shape and helped them win the American Revolution. Now Steuben is gaining new life through a biography by Paul Lockhart, a professor of history at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Lockhart, who is an expert in European History, will discuss his new book at Valley Forge National Historical Park on Oct. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. "The Drillmaster of Valley Forge: The Baron de Steuben and the Making of the American Army," talk will be followed by a question and answer session and a book signing. Lockhart's book, the first biography of Steuben since 1937, gives a complete portrait of the military leader who was second only to Washington in making victory over the British possible.

Volunteers to Get Hands Dirty During National Public Lands Day - 15-09-2008
More than 300 volunteers are expected to help spruce up Valley Forge National Historical Park on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 in celebration of National Public Lands Day. The annual event, now in its 15th year, is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the nation's 600 million acres of public lands. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. participants at the Park will remove invasive plants, weed, repair fencing, and remove rust crayfish from Valley Creek.

Revolutionary Run Sets Record in Participantion, Proceeds - 24-06-2008
A record was set at this year's Valley Forge Revolutionary Five-mile Run - but not by a runner. Thanks to a 20 percent increase in the number of participants and sponsors, the event raised $31,000; the most in its three-year history.

March Out of the Continental Army - 09-06-2008
As the troops march out of Valley Forge, the summer marches in. Valley Forge National Historical Park in King of Prussia officially kicks off the season on Flag Day, June 14, with the 230th anniversary celebration of the March-out of the Continental Army. To honor those soldiers who left Valley Forge and went on to secure our nation's independence, re-enactors from the Oneida Indian Nation, Park Rangers, and volunteers will host a living history encampment at the Park's Muhlenberg Brigade on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cannon firings will be conducted at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

National Trails Day 2008 - 30-05-2008
Outdoor recreation and healthy living will be celebrated during National Trails Day festivities this Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Valley Forge National Historical Park. A tent pitching contest, a hike along the River Trail, educational clinics, fitness assessments, exhibits and more mark the annual event designed to promote the rewarding relationship between good health and our natural environment. The celebration is a collaborative effort among the Park, the Lipton Tea Healthy Parks - Healthy Living program, Eastern Mountain Sports and the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area. It will be held at the Betzwood Picnic Area, located on the north side of the Park, accessible to foot trails, bike paths, equestrian trails and kayaking on the Schuylkill River.

Valley Forge Park Awarded Funding for Visitor Improvements - 28-04-2008
Valley Forge National Historical Park was awarded $375,000 in funding for three out of 110 projects approved by the National Park Centennial Initiative, a 10 year program to reinvigorate America?s national parks and prepare them for a second century. The initiative includes a focus on increased funding for park operations plus a President's Challenge: up to $100 million a year in federal funds to match $100 million a year in philanthropic donations to the National Park Service.

Valley Forge National Historical Park will celebrate National Park Week, an annual Presidential proclaimed celebration of all national parks, April 19 through 27. At Valley Forge, the week begins on Sunday, April 20, with the third annual Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-mile Run, 3-mile walk and kids fun run, which benefits the park's trails. On Saturday, April 26, it's National Junior Ranger Day where kids can explore and experience the outdoors while earning a junior ranger badge.

"Explore, learn, protect" is the motto of the Junior Rangers, and that's exactly what children ages 3 to 12 will do on Saturday, April 26, at Valley Forge National Historical Park in King of Prussia, Pa.To celebrate National Junior Ranger Day, the Park will host a host of ranger-led activities and demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Junior Rangers program encourages children to explore the Park's natural and cultural resources and interact with Park staff.

Valley Forge Welcomes "The Oneidas at the Battle of Oriskany" - 26-03-2008
For the first time, the Oneida Nation will display its original painting, "The Oneidas at the Battle of Oriskany" at Valley Forge National Historic Park in Valley Forge, Penn., in April. The painting depicts one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War, with an emphasis on the Oneidas who fought alongside the colonists as the United States' first allies. The scene centers on Han Yerry, an Oneida warrior who, despite being shot in the wrist, continued to fight with the aid of his wife, Two Kettles. Han Yerry's son is also shown fighting off the enemy loyalists.
